How to convert a handwritten flight logbook to digital
Move paper hours into the electronic logbook you already use. You photograph the pages; we run OCR; you review before export.
What “convert” means here
Converting a handwritten flight logbook to digital is not switching from paper to a new electronic logbook brand. It is capturing each paper page, extracting the flight fields, checking them against the image, and exporting a file your existing app can import. ForeFlight, LogTen Pro, and MyFlightbook stay the system of record. This service fills the gap between a bound book and those apps.
You photograph or scan each two-page spread yourself. We do not mail books in or scan them for you. A phone is enough when the spread is flat, lit evenly, and in focus. Dedicated scan apps can help with skew, but they are optional. Read our photo guide, how to take photos of a logbook for OCR, before you process a full book, and use the free trial credits to test your setup on a couple of pages.
Digitize a paper flight logbook
The same steps work whether you want to digitize a paper flight logbook or convert a paper aviation logbook to digital. Photograph each open spread, choose Jeppesen or ASA, review the rows, and download Generic CSV. The result is a file your electronic logbook can import. It does not fill an FAA form such as an 8710, and the hours stay in the electronic logbook you already use.
Digitize an old flight logbook
An old flight logbook is often a thick career book: faded ink, a tight binding, and decades of rows. Work one open spread at a time. Clip curled pages flat, and retake any frame with a dark gutter. Run the free page check on the first photo before you buy a credit pack. That check does not use a credit.
Which paper books we can digitize
This guide is for pilot flight logbooks: the hours, aircraft, and routes you flew. It does not digitize aircraft maintenance records, such as airframe, engine, or propeller logs.
OCR (AI-based optical character recognition) is tuned today for Jeppesen professional logbooks (the primary pack) and ASA Standard Pilot Log pages. Choose the matching format at upload so the right extraction pack runs. Other paper layouts, such as custom binders, CASA-style books, and scans of unknown layouts, are not OCR-tuned yet. Uploading them as Jeppesen or ASA usually wastes a page. See Is my logbook supported? and email support if your publisher is not listed. Do not buy a large credit pack hoping an unsupported book will “just work.” For the format-specific guide, read Jeppesen logbook to digital or ASA logbook to digital.
Check compatibility before you spend a credit
Upload one or two photos of your book. We check them automatically, and that check does not use a page credit. It is a risk-free way to confirm that the page looks like a Jeppesen or ASA logbook and that the photo shows the open two-page spread. Read the feedback before you upload or process the rest of the book. An unsupported layout or a single page is flagged first, so you do not spend credits finding that out later.
Step-by-step: paper to CSV
- Create an account. New accounts include 3 free page credits and do not require a card.
- Photograph or scan each open spread in one landscape image. Include both pages, column headers, and the date column.
- Upload, select Jeppesen or ASA, and start processing. Most pages finish in about a minute once a worker picks them up.
- Open Review when status is Completed. Edit any field beside the page image. You are responsible for the hours you keep.
- Export Generic CSV (21 Jeppesen-style columns) and import it using your app’s CSV flow. Follow the export & import guide for ForeFlight, LogTen Pro, and MyFlightbook.
A credit is used only when processing succeeds. Photo-quality failures can be skipped without a charge; retry with a better image instead of the same blurry file.
OCR accuracy vs a transcription service
Automatic OCR is fast. It is not a guarantee that every column is perfect, and it is not a mail-in human transcription desk. Confidence scores highlight uncertain cells. You still review. That is the product: speed on the typing, with a human (you) on the sign-off. If your format isn't listed, email support before you buy credits.
What it costs
After the 3 free credits, pages are pay-as-you-go. Credits do not expire. There is no subscription. Dollar amounts are listed only on the homepage Pricing section.
Quick answers
- Convert handwritten flight logbook to digital
- Photograph each two-page spread, upload the images, choose Jeppesen or ASA, review the extracted flights, then download Generic CSV and import it into your electronic logbook. You photograph or scan the pages yourself. We do not offer a mail-in scanning service.
- How do I digitize a paper aviation logbook?
- Use the same photo-in flow. Good images matter more than a dedicated scanner. Follow the logbook photo guide, then process a test page with free credits before you upload an entire book.
- OCR for pilot logbook
- OCR for a pilot logbook reads a photo or scan of each spread and fills flight fields from that image. You still open Review and correct the table before export. Handwriting, glare, and the wrong format selection all reduce accuracy. It is not a guarantee that every column is right, and it is not a mail-in transcription service.
- Can OCR convert a pilot logbook automatically?
- OCR extracts fields automatically, but you always review and can edit before export. It is not a hands-off replacement for checking your hours. Credits are used only when processing succeeds.
- Is this a flight logbook transcription service?
- It is a self-serve web app, not a mail-in transcription desk. You capture pages; the service runs OCR and you verify the table. If you need another paper format, email support rather than buying a large credit pack on an unsupported layout.
- How do I digitize a paper logbook into ForeFlight?
- Photograph or scan each two-page spread, choose Jeppesen or ASA, and review the extracted flights. Download the Generic CSV, then import that file with the CSV flow in ForeFlight. The import steps are on the export and import guide at /export-guide.
- What if I scan my logbook pages and expect them to be imported?
- A scan is the photo we read. OCR fills a table from that image, you review the rows, and you download a CSV. You then import that CSV yourself. Scanning a page does not send the book into ForeFlight.
- Do you offer logbook transcription?
- Not as a mail-in service. You photograph the pages, OCR reads the handwriting, and you check the table before export. Nobody else types the book for you.
- Is this a pilot logbook data entry service?
- There is no data-entry clerk. OCR fills the flight table from your photo, and you edit any cell that is wrong before you export. You are still the one who signs off on the hours.
- What does logbook conversion mean here?
- Logbook conversion means turning paper flights into a CSV your electronic logbook can import. It does not mean moving you to a new logbook brand. ForeFlight, LogTen Pro, and MyFlightbook stay where you keep the hours.
